Alcobaca Catholic Monastery or known as Santa Maria de Alcobaca. Yes, another religious site, dating from 1153, and yet, another Portuguese king making a vow to build a great monastery if God granted him victory against the Moors in an important battle at Santarém.
Founded by the first Portuguese king in 1153, the Cistercian Alcobaça Monastery.
Was one of the richest and most prestigious monasteries in medieval Europe. Its church was the first building in Portugal to adopt the Gothic style and was (and still is!) the largest church in the country. Follow J. Christina to Fatima, Batalha, Alcobaca and Nazare here.
